Topspeed has received an overall Green rating following a transport inspection carried out by the Office for Nuclear Regulation (ONR) in July.
The inspection reviewed Topspeed’s arrangements for carrying Class 7 radioactive materials by road.
No non-compliances identified
The inspection covered a range of areas, including carrier duties, emergency and contingency planning, radiation protection, risk assessment, training and competence, and vehicle equipment and markings.
The ONR report confirmed that Topspeed complied with the documentary evidence provided as part of the assessment, with no non-compliances identified and Green ratings awarded across all areas assessed.
The inspection also considered Topspeed’s radiation protection, training, emergency planning and vehicle arrangements.
Topspeed provided supporting safety documentation, training records, monitoring equipment and suitably equipped vehicles.
Continuing to strengthen our arrangements
While no significant shortfalls were identified, the inspection resulted in some areas of Regulatory Advice relating primarily to documentation and enhancements to existing arrangements.
These include strengthening the formal approval process for the radiation risk assessment, reviewing the number of Radiation Protection Supervisors, developing a more accessible summary of the Local Rules, and further enhancing the detail contained within the emergency plan.
For Topspeed, the inspection provides an important opportunity to demonstrate the robust systems and expertise that underpin its specialist transport services, while continuing to identify ways to strengthen its processes.
Stephen Clegg, Chief Executive Officer at Topspeed, said “The inspection was an important opportunity to demonstrate the arrangements we have in place for the safe transportation of radioactive materials and to have these independently assessed. We’re pleased with the Green rating and the confirmation that no non-compliances or significant shortfalls were identified.
“The advice provided gives us some useful areas to continue developing our arrangements and maintaining the high standards expected when transporting specialist and regulated goods.”
