Topspeed Couriers CEO and Founder Stephen Clegg recently joined the EV Cafe podcast as a guest alongside Webfleet, sharing an honest and practical account of how Topspeed is transforming specialist logistics through fleet electrification, data-led decision-making and a long-term commitment to sustainability.
The conversation reflected much of what defines Topspeed today. As a specialist courier business with nearly four decades of experience, we have always focused on doing the difficult jobs well, from transporting dangerous, regulated and high-value goods to supporting time-critical and event-critical operations across the UK. For Stephen, the move towards electric vehicles was never about following a trend. It was about finding better ways to run a more efficient, more resilient and more responsible business.
During the podcast, Stephen explained that Topspeed’s sustainability journey accelerated when carbon reduction became a growing requirement within public sector procurement. Instead of treating it as a box-ticking exercise, we took a closer look at our emissions, our operations and the changes that would make a meaningful difference. That thinking helped shape the Carbon Reduction Plan that now sits at the heart of our environmental strategy and supports our wider commitment to reach Net Zero by 2040, with a fully electric fleet targeted by 2027.
What came across clearly in the discussion was that electrification is not as simple as buying new vans and sending them out on the road. It takes planning, investment, driver engagement and the right operational support. Topspeed began introducing electric vans in 2022 and has since invested millions of pounds into its growing EV fleet and charging infrastructure. Along the way, we have learned how route planning, charging strategy, driver coaching and continuous performance monitoring all work together to make an electric fleet successful in the real world.
A key part of that journey has been our long-standing partnership with Webfleet. As Stephen outlined on the podcast, access to live and historical fleet data has helped Topspeed build a more informed and proactive way of managing vehicles, drivers and service performance. From vehicle tracking and EV data insights to integrated camera technology and driver coaching tools, Webfleet has played an important role in helping us improve road safety, support our drivers and run our fleet more efficiently.
That visibility has delivered practical benefits across the business. By encouraging smoother, safer driving and combining telematics with AI-supported camera systems, we have seen significant reductions in incidents and claims. The shift has helped lower maintenance demands, reduce downtime and improve driver wellbeing, while also strengthening the reliability that our customers depend on. For a business handling specialist consignments, those operational improvements matter just as much as the environmental ones.
Stephen also spoke candidly about some of the misconceptions around electric logistics. While challenges remain, particularly around charging infrastructure and the pace of transition, our experience has shown that electric vans can deliver reliably for specialist courier work when they are integrated properly into the operation. Just as importantly, the data allows us to respond with confidence when assumptions are made about EV performance, giving customers reassurance that service levels remain as strong as ever.
The timing of the podcast also makes this a particularly proud moment for Topspeed. Our sustainability work has recently been recognised with a King’s Award for Enterprise in Sustainable Development, one of the UK’s highest honours for business achievement. For us, that recognition reflects years of careful work across the business, from fleet investment and carbon reporting to operational improvements and the efforts of the wider Topspeed team who continue to make progress possible every day.
Stephen’s appearance on the EV Cafe podcast was a valuable opportunity to share what we have learned so far; that sustainability in logistics needs to be practical, measurable and built into the way a business really operates. At Topspeed, we remain committed to investing in smarter, safer and more sustainable specialist courier services, and to proving that doing things differently can deliver real benefits for our customers, our people and the future of the industry.
