Topspeed and Cardiff University

Gillian Lockley, MD of Topspeed

Some months ago, we were delighted to have been awarded a contract with Cardiff University School of Medicine for the transportation of radiopharmaceuticals for use in medical diagnosis and research.

The Wales Research and Diagnostic PET Imaging Centre (PETIC) delivers diagnostic Positron Emission Tomography (PET) services to support academia and the life science industry.

PETIC manufacture the radiopharmaceuticals which are then injected into patients and a PET scanner is used to take pictures of the distribution of the radiopharmaceutical in the patient.

With a very short shelf life, time is of the essence when getting the radiopharmaceuticals to the PET Scanners, and it’s Topspeed’s job to get this done as efficiently as possible, time and time again.  As the scanners can be as far away as a four-hour drive, and with a half-life of a few hours, getting the radiopharmaceuticals to the patient without delay requires proper planning and allocation of enough resources to cover a range of contingencies.

To make sure this happens Topspeed have a team of employed ADR drivers and Topspeed vans located close to the Centre in Cardiff and the drivers work with PETIC and the Operations Team to make sure everything runs according to plan.

Topspeed MD, Gillian Lockley commented ‘This contract award is a great fit for Topspeed and compliments our other work in Nuclear medicine.  It’s given us the opportunity to expand our pool of drivers based within easy reach of PETIC, who have all received specialist ADR Driver Training at our Academy based at the Winsford HQ.  We’ve also worked with PETIC to test our arrangements for carrying radiopharmaceuticals to ensure the highest levels of compliance and customer service.’
