Making a Difference

Robot Orchestra

Last March we reported that we had been asked to play Roadie to the Robot Orchestra on their ‘tour’ of Cardiff, Jodrell Bank and the Trafford Centre.

Since then we have helped further with the careful transportation of this precious musical cargo and therefore we were delighted to receive an email from The University of Manchester where The Robot Orchestra was conceived and built with the news that the Manchester Robot Orchestra Collective picked up an award from The University of Manchester for the Outstanding Public and Community Engagement Initiative (National) Make A Difference Award 2018.

Professor Danielle George, Vice Dean at the Faculty of Science & Engineering was quoted as saying “the award reflects and recognises the enormous contribution by absolutely everyone who played a part in this amazing project. Thank you again for your contribution. We should all be very proud. To put this in context, we’re the largest university in the UK with over 40,000 students and 12,000 staff, where widening participation has always been an important part of our fabric. The projects shortlisted for Making a Difference Awards deliver significant impact at a local, national and international level”

The award adds to the Robot Orchestra Collective trophy cabinet: Winner of the Association of International Broadcasting Award, 2017, Children’s and Youth Category, Host Favourite and Maker of Merit at Maker Faire UK 2018 and Highly commended for Outstanding public engagement initiative, The University of Manchester Better World Showcase Award 2018.

Dave Turner, Managing Director at Topspeed commented “congratulations to all involved in this innovative and unique project, we are used to carrying special and fragile consignments nationwide, though to date this is our only Orchestra!”
